Exploring wellbeing in cancer care

Chaired by Jason Lintern (Health Innovation Lead, Welsh Government), the event provided an opportunity to explore how education, innovation, and research can shape and enhance welling in cancer care.  With a diverse group of colleagues in the room, including specialist cancer clinicians, it was evident that many are actively contributing to improving patient wellbeing across Wales.

The role of Macmillan Cancer Support Centres

Colleagues from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Macmillan Cancer Support shared insights into how support services are delivered across three centres in north Wales: Ysbyty Gwynedd, Wrexham Maelor and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

The patient voice

Lowri Griffiths (Tenovus) reinforced the importance of the patient’s voice, empowering and encouraging them to shape policies at a national and community level.

Her talk set the stage for a for-group discussions, where attendees considered the most valuable resources for holistic care, mental health support, and effective information-sharing with those effected by cancer.

Collaborative research: The THRIVE Project

The event highlighted the power of collaboration. The Joshua Tree and Edge Hill University supported by North West Cancer Research, came together to launch the THRIVE Project, an initiative focused on enhancing cancer support through research and innovation.

Key takeaways and future directions

  • Involving patients and the public in service development and research is key
  • The third sector has many willing partners who are keen to collaborate for the benefit of patients – reach out to them!
  • There is a wealth of research out there, from clinical trials to pilots – how do spread this learning across Wales?
