The AI Commission for Health and Social Care has endorsed algorithmic transparency recording standard (ATRS), a framework designed to improve the transparency of algorithmic and AI tools used across the sector.
As AI tools become increasingly prevalent in health and social care, the ATRS provides a standardised way for public sector organisations to record and share information. This covers what tools are being used, where, and how they work, and their impact on services - providing clear and accessible information for the public.
The Centre for Digital Public Services (CDPS) has recommended that Welsh public sector organisations adopt the ATRS, particularly for tools that:
- Play a significant role in decision-making processed that affect the public.
- Directly interact with the public.
Organisations using ATRS will maintain a live register with key information such as:
- How the tool works
- It’s role in decision-making processes
- The problem the tool is designed to address
- The rationale for its use
- Ownership and responsibility of the tool
Endorsement from the AI commission
The AI Commission’s endorsement encourages health and social care organisations in Wales to adopt ATRS as a guiding standard. ATRS will help improve transparency of AI use across the sector, ensure safe and ethical adoption of AI, and enhance patient care through responsible use of technology.
Further information and guidance on complying with ATRS can be found on UK Government’s ATRS Hub.
