AI Commission for Health and Social Care

The Commission comprises members from:

• Health and social care
• Life sciences
• Local government
• Higher education
• Independent experts
• Welsh Government

The members:

• Enable the use of AI-based technologies to aid staff decision-making, enable preventative care, and improve services.
• Leverage their insights and authority from various sectors to guide technical implementation, service delivery, and the appropriate use of data.
• Promote the evidence-informed adoption of AI-enabled technologies, considering the needs of both staff and patients.
• Collaborate to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI in health and care decision-making and services.

We will work with organisations in the health and social care sector in Wales to understand their requirements. This will help us use AI to solve real problems and improve services. The commission will aim to:

• identify the barriers and opportunities for the adoption of AI
• proactively review these barriers and opportunities and take action where appropriate
• prioritise areas that may benefit from the use of AI tools in the medium and long term

Beyond the application of AI in certain areas, there is a need to understand and evidence how the wider health, social care and life sciences sectors can support and enable the delivery of AI. This includes:

• interest groups
• skills development
• technical and regulatory capabilities
• links with higher education and staff groups 

The Commission will work collaboratively across the sector with UK and international partners to help develop and adopt best practice for the adoption of AI. We will use evidence-based methods to reduce risks, ensure patient and public safety and improve outcomes for health and social care in Wales.
