Accelerate is a programme launched and led by the Life Sciences Hub Wales in collaboration with Cardiff University, Swansea University and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

It aims to support and accelerate the translation of ideas from the health care system into new technology, products and services. Accelerate promotes the deployment and adoption of new technology, products and services into health and care, to create lasting economic value in Wales.

A £24m programme, it is co-funded by the Welsh European Funding Office European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Government’s Health and Social Services Group, universities and health boards.

In line with the role of the Life Sciences Hub Wales, Accelerate is designed to engage widely across the NHS in Wales as both a source and beneficiary of innovation, supported by established business development capability reaching through sector value and supply-chains through innovation ‘pull and push’ mechanisms.

"Developing innovative new ways to prevent, treat and cure illness and disease is a vital part of the Welsh Government’s vision for the future of the NHS in Wales. The ACCELERATE programme and new health innovation centres fund will help develop new ideas for health products and services more quickly for use in our NHS and across the world."

Vaughan Gething, AM, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, Welsh Government

A dynamic model of innovation development and delivery

Accelerate focusses on ways of speeding up the process of exploiting opportunities that help address health or social care need.

The operational process features a:

  • collaborative innovation model
  • living laboratory
  • managed pipeline that is responsive to clinical need and economic opportunity
  • clinical innovation ecosystem reaching throughout Wales
  • a Team Wales approach

The collaborative innovation model provides a mechanism for clinicians, industry and academia to present and collaborate in addressing health challenges and seizing solution opportunities through an integrated collaborative approach. This includes a forum where those needs are heard by innovators who have the tools and resources to address them along with a living laboratory approach. This allows innovators to test, iterate and refine viable solutions in an agile way, in real life scenarios where possible, working alongside clinicians and healthcare professional, validating health benefit and wider market potential. The managed pipeline is our major role at the Life Science Hub Wales, working in partnership with leading Welsh universities. We make sure ideas that are truly responsive to clinical need get progressed in the most appropriate manner to maximise chances of success It is an inherently co-produced approach– capturing how the NHS can be both a source and a beneficiary of innovation.

"With a growing and aging population, and increasing demands on our services, finding new and different ways to improve efficiency within the NHS is vital. System, process and product innovation is the best way to do this which is why this investment into the ACCELERATE programme is ground-breaking for Wales. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board look forward to working closely with the Life Sciences Wales Hub Wales throughout the ACCELERATE programme and more widely".

Len Richards, Chief Executive Officer at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
