The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) are calling for collaboration with developers, as new report reveals future innovations and data protection concerns in genomics.
The ICO have recently released a new report on genomics, highlighting the importance of a privacy-by-design approach to support innovation while safeguarding data privacy. This report explores how genomics could soon transform everyday life. Hospitals may use DNA to predict and prevent diseases, insures may adjust policies based on genetic health markers, and wearable technology could personalise fitness plans based on genetic tendencies.
The report also examines data protection challenges and scenarios arising from advancements in genomics, including third-party data handling, transparency and consent, discrimination and bias, family sharing, and security issues.
As genomics is continuing to reshape healthcare and expand into sectors including insurance, education, and law enforcement, the ICO are calling for developers to engage in this guidance, and to join the Regulatory Sandbox. This free service enables developers to gain expert guidance on building privacy-compliant innovations in genomics, helping turn transformative ideas into trusted and legally compliant solutions for healthcare and beyond.
