Cardiff University is Wales's only member of the Russell Group of research-intensive British universities. The university is attended by around 34,000 students and includes the Cardiff University School of Medicine. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, the university was recognised as a centre of excellence for psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience.

Bangor University, located in North Wales, is attended by around 10,000 students. Research in the university focusses on three key themes of energy and the environment; health, wellbeing, and behaviour; and language, culture, and society. The North Wales Medical School is housed within the university, with the first student intake for Medicine expected in September 2024.

Aberystwyth University is attended by over 8,000 students and is made of three faculties; Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Physical Sciences, and Earth and Life Sciences.

The NCPHWR is a Health and Care Research Wales funded centre that houses researchers, statisticians and data analysts from Welsh universities and Public Health Wales to understand, evaluate and inform population health Improvements.
